North of St-Mathieu-du-Parc is the famous National Park of Mauricie with its 532 square kilometres of nature, a rich and varied flora with 440 vascular species, 85 moss species and 68 species of lichens. In addition, about 70 rare species of special interest have been identified so far. It is also more than 50 species of mammals such as black bear, moose, common shrew, brown bat to name a few. Reptiles, amphibians, birds coexist in this beautiful park. Not only is wildlife viewing an activity in itself, but you can enjoy the park by bike, on foot, canoe, kayak, or fishing, or throw yourself in the water for a nice swim.
The 127-square-kilometre recreational park of Saint-Mathieu-du-Parc is open all year round. For your hiking, take the marked trails and admire what nature has to offer. Know that the National Trail crosses the park from east to west for a length of 30 km. Snowmobilers and mountain bikers will also be well served. A magnificent climbing wall will delight lovers of thrills. And do not miss the Amphitheatre In the heart of the forest with its stage show built at the foot of an impressive rock wall and stone benches in the form of circular bearings. A stop is needed at the Covered Bridge Park built in 1936 and spanning the Shawinigan River. This covered bridge is classified as a heritage building. The historic park commemorates part of the history of this area. Interpretation panels are installed all along the trail. That said, this place is perfect for a picnic.
Sport fishing on the Shawinigan River has become a very popular activity, especially since Vision Mauricie has sown trout every year in several strategic locations. You will find two species of trout: brown trout and rainbow trout.
The "Devil's Fall" event returns every year and becomes a rendezvous for trail running enthusiasts. The infernal "Snow Trail" is a winter racing event on groomed mountain trails. Take the opportunity to also fatbike. In the summer, the "Sasquatch" event takes over and offers you an infernal mountain trail on different courses and levels of difficulty.
Finally, the Duchy of Bicolline is also a great attraction in this region of Mauricie. It turns out to be the largest immersive medieval fantasy gathering in Canada. You will cross in the medieval village of elves, mercenaries, pirates, monsters, valorous knights ... and all this beautiful world (nearly 3000 !!!) will face for an epic battle!
